The Canadian Hair Loss Foundation has an active role in education. One of our fundamental goals is to provide support to efforts that educate either health care practioners or the general public about hair loss. Each week we address general questions from our online visitors.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q:  Are there are any known causes or contributors to lichen planopilaris?

A: At present, the cause of lichen planopilaris (LPP) is unknown.  Some researchers have studied whether triggers like medications or viral infections could be related but there is no good evidence for such involvement. It appears LPP is more common in women. Stress does not appear to be a cause either - but some patients notice worsening of itching, burning or shedding at times of stress.
